Jonathan Rowe has gone from a slow start at Bologna to one of Serie A’s in-form wingers, with the club now valuing him at around €50m.

The sides met in the league phase on 25 September, Aston Villa winning 1-0 as Rowe made only his second Bologna appearance. On Thursday, in the Europa League quarter-final first leg, Villa won 3-1, Rowe scored for Bologna and repeatedly troubled them with pace and clean striking. Unai Emery said their analysis showed Rowe had improved a lot, was playing at a fantastic level and caused more problems than expected. Pushed out of Marseille in August after a clash with Adrien Rabiot, Rowe said, “I hold no grudge. We are adults, sometimes emotions carry you over the line, then you shake hands and move on. In Marseille there was a lot of internal and external pressure, everything was amplified,” he told Corriere di Bologna.

Signed for €19.5m, a club-record fee, the 22-year-old needed time to grasp Italian football and his first four months had minimal impact. His season truly kicked on in 2026, with an emphasis on being decisive quickly from the flanks.

Rowe has since nailed down the left wing in Vincenzo Italiano’s four-two-three-one and returned four goals and two assists in his last six matches.

Three Premier League scouts watched him at the Dall’Ara on Thursday. Rowe logged 208 minutes for Norwich in 2021-2022, has said he wants to return one day, and is under contract until 2029. Bologna would be reluctant to sell for under €50m.
