Jordan Henderson was carried off on a stretcher during England’s celebrations after their 3-2 win over Mexico in the World Cup last 16 at the Azteca Stadium.

According to L'Équipe, the Brentford midfielder, 36, tripped when trying to step over an advertising board as Oasis’s Wonderwall played. He had remained an unused substitute and has only played six minutes at this tournament, against Panama.

He appeared to injure his wrist and was shielded by team-mates and staff before being taken away. Footage on social media did not make the nature of the injury clear.

David Ornstein said it seemed serious and that concern was high. After the match, Newcastle defender Dan Burn described the injury as uncertain.

England manager Thomas Tuchel said Henderson fell and hurt his wrist, adding that it looked really serious.
