José Melro leaves Benfica for Marítimo and posts farewell message

José Melro has left Benfica to join Marítimo on a permanent deal on winter deadline day, and on Thursday he bid farewell on social media. He wants to help the islanders win promotion to Liga Portugal Betclic 2026/2027.

In a post on Instagram, the 21-year-old thanked Benfica for three years of learning, spoke of the people who helped his integration and said the memories will stay with him. He added that a simple thank you does not cover what the club gave him.

After three and a half years at Seixal, he featured for the under-19s, B team and under-23s before moving to the Madeira club.

This season he made nine appearances for Benfica B, seven in Liga Portugal Meu Super and two in the Premier League International Cup, across 451 minutes, scoring one goal.

Marítimo lead the second tier, and the move comes with a view to playing in the top flight next season.
