Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has blocked any move for striker Gonzalo Garcia this summer, according to AS.
Madrid were open to selling Garcia before Mourinho’s arrival, although they intended to insert a buy-back clause in any potential deal. He has already been linked with Real Betis.
The 21-year-old struggled for game time last season despite his heroics at last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, where he won the top scorer’s award.
He started just 15 games across all competitions, chipping in with eight goals and three assists.
Mourinho wants to sign a new striker to bolster his attacking options ahead of next season. However, Madrid are prioritising the signings of a new centre-back and midfielder.
With the club’s priority lying elsewhere, Mourinho wants to keep Garcia. The Spanish youth international can provide cover through the middle and on the right flank.
He may struggle for game time if he stays at Madrid, which could hinder his development.
Garcia is behind Kylian Mbappe in the pecking order for the central striking role. He would also have to contend with Endrick for opportunities.
The Madrid academy graduate would be better served playing elsewhere to achieve his full potential.
Betis could be a good destination for him, with the club needing to sign a striker this summer.
