Real Madrid will be reunited with former manager Jose Mourinho on Tuesday when they face Benfica for the first leg of their Champions League play-off round tie. Fresh talk of a clause that could ease his return to the Bernabeu has emerged.

Benfica won the last meeting 4-2. Diario AS reports that Mourinho has a clause in his contract in Portugal allowing him to leave without penalty up to 10 days after the season concludes.

Real Madrid’s hierarchy continue to think highly of Mourinho, despite his three-year spell from 2010 to 2013 falling short of expectations.

Alvaro Arbeloa is in charge until the end of the season and the club are weighing up candidates. Jurgen Klopp is the dream, but he looks unlikely to return to management anytime soon. Mourinho may be viewed as the next best option, given his ability to work with strong personalities, where Xabi Alonso fell short during his tenure.

Arbeloa could yet earn an extra year, dependent on success in La Liga and the Champions League, which is far from guaranteed. For now, there have been no contacts with Mourinho’s representatives.
