Jose Mourinho has said the Portugal national team 'look like any run-of-the-mill team' without Cristiano Ronaldo in the side.
Portugal played out a goalless stalemate withWorld Cup co-hosts Mexico on Sunday, with Roberto Martinez's side unable to break down their hosts despite 67% of the possession.
Portugal are without record scorer Ronaldo, who has not been risked due to a minor issue. Mourinho has questioned those who suggest Portugal are a better team without the 41-year-old, insisting Ronaldo's presence put fear into opposition sides.
"Take Cristiano Ronaldo out of the picture and Portugal look like any run-of-the-mill team" he said, as perGOAL.
"People keep asking us not to call him up. Well, he didn’t play today and you saw the result. No threat, no fear from the opposition. Just a team being put under pressure by Mexico"
"When Ronaldo is on the pitch, the opposition think twice. Without him, they don’t think at all."
Former France forward Thierry Henry also criticised the Portuguese attack. In the absence of Ronaldo, he said Martinez's side failed to make the most of the service provided by Manchester United captainBruno Fernandes.
“The forwards have to step up. Bruno created five chances, including two clear-cut ones, but Portugal couldn’t finish a single one.
“When you’ve got a midfielder like him consistently creating opportunities, the job for the strikers is simple—put the ball in the net. Instead, they’re making things much harder than they should.”
