José Mourinho has been officially named Real Madrid head coach, 13 years after his previous spell. Benfica said in a statement on Tuesday that he is leaving to take charge at Real Madrid.
The move had been expected, but its announcement was tied to Real Madrid’s presidential election. With Florentino Pérez re-elected on Sunday, the club could confirm Mourinho’s return.
Real Madrid paid close to €15 million to Benfica to bring back the 63-year-old.
His recent stints at Tottenham, Roma, Fenerbahçe and Benfica were mixed, and he has won only one trophy across the past nine seasons, the 2022 Europa Conference League with Roma.
Mourinho replaces Alvaro Arbeloa, whose departure was made official on Tuesday. In Lisbon he will be succeeded by Marco Silva, the former Fulham manager.
