Liverpool Eyeing Djed Spence as Versatile Defensive Option Under Andoni Iraola

Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements has naturally centred on centre backs in recent weeks, but a right-back name has quietly emerged in transfer discussions, Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence.

The England international has been linked with a move to Anfield following an impressive World Cup, while Tottenham are reportedly willing to listen to offers as they reshape their squad this summer.

Speaking on the latest Media Matters podcast for Anfield Index, Dave Davis asked David Lynch whether there was any substance to the speculation surrounding Spence. Rather than dismissing the idea completely, Lynch acknowledged why the profile makes sense, while making it clear that he has yet to hear anything concrete.

Profile fits Liverpool’s requirements

Liverpool’s need for another full back has become increasingly obvious. Conor Bradley continues his recovery from a long term injury, while Andoni Iraola has already admitted his squad is “very thin” defensively.

Spence’s versatility is one of the main reasons his name has surfaced. Comfortable on either flank, he offers the sort of flexibility Liverpool have often valued in recent recruitment.

However, Lynch urged caution when assessing the reports.

“No, not at all. And to be honest, it just feels a little bit like to me kind of two and two making five kind of situation.”

That measured response reflects Liverpool’s current transfer strategy. Numerous names continue to circulate, but only a handful appear to have genuine momentum behind them.

World Cup performances raise Spence’s stock

Spence’s performances for England have undoubtedly increased interest across Europe. Reports suggest Tottenham are prepared to consider offers as they trim their squad, with clubs from both the Premier League and Serie A monitoring his situation.

Lynch admitted he can understand why Liverpool supporters have connected the dots.

“I know he would make sense for Liverpool in a lot of ways. Homegrown, plays both sides.”

Those qualities align neatly with Liverpool’s current needs. Iraola wants greater competition across the back line, while the club would benefit from a player capable of covering multiple positions without requiring wholesale tactical adjustments.

Yet Lynch stopped well short of describing Spence as an active Liverpool target.

“I just personally at the moment, I’ll just be honest, I haven’t heard anything about that that makes me think it’s a real, you know, he’s 100% a target or a real goer.”

Liverpool remain patient in defensive market

Liverpool’s recruitment team have shown repeatedly that they are prepared to wait for the right opportunity rather than force an early deal.

That approach appears unchanged under Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola.

While Spence may satisfy many of the attributes Liverpool seek, Lynch’s assessment suggests supporters should resist treating the links as anything more advanced than speculation.

He praised the defender’s recent form, saying:

“I think he had a great World Cup. I think he’s a decent player. It would be a kind of smart signing.”

Even so, he concluded with the clearest indication of where things currently stand.

“I just haven’t been given a nod on that that makes me think he’s definitely a priority for Liverpool.”

For now, Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements continues. Djed Spence remains a player whose versatility and recent performances make him an understandable candidate, but based on Lynch’s insight during Media Matters with Dave Davis, there is currently no indication that interest has progressed beyond the level of a logical fit.
