Jürgen Klopp says he pulled out all the stops in 2017, when Kylian Mbappé was at Monaco, to bring him to Liverpool, calling it 'the failed transfer we invested in the most' on Magenta TV. The France captain chose PSG instead.
The former Liverpool manager exchanged words with Mbappé after France beat Morocco 2-0 in a World Cup quarter-final on Thursday night. He also greeted the forward’s mother in the stands, a keen Liverpool supporter. Klopp led the club for nine years between 2015 and 2024.
He recounted flying from Blackpool to Nice to meet the family. 'In Nice, the whole Mbappé family boarded a private jet with five rooms, or something like that'.
They were keen not to be seen. 'Then we flew in circles in the plane, we talked with the family, ate good food.' Klopp has been tipped to become Germany’s next head coach.
Despite those efforts, Mbappé joined PSG that summer on loan with an option to buy. He signed permanently in 2018 for €180m.
