The build-up to the World Cup semi-final between Spain and France has been dominated by one name: Lamine Yamal.
The Barcelona sensation grabbed headlines after Spain booked their place in the last four, insisting that the reigning European champions had nothing to fear from Didier Deschamps’ side.
It took little time for his comments to make headlines, but within the French camp, they have been received very differently from how many expected.
Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, who will line up against his club teammate on one of football’s biggest stages, has responded to Yamal’s remarks, making it clear that France have taken the comments as a sign of confidence rather than disrespect.
Following Spain’s victory over Belgium, Yamal confidently looked ahead to the meeting with France.

“If they have anyone to fear, it’s us – we’re the ones who knocked them out (at Euro 2024).
“We’re two of the world’s top teams – in my view, the two best – and we’re not afraid at all,” said the Barcelona winger.
Asked about those remarks during France’s pre-match media duties, Kounde refused to fuel any unnecessary controversy.
“At no point have we felt disrespected. I know Lamine very well, and this is a sign of confidence and an extra source of motivation for him,” said the French defender.
Kounde also offered an insight into how France intend to approach one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.

The Barcelona full-back acknowledged Spain’s ability to dominate possession, describing Luis de la Fuente’s side as one of the most technically accomplished teams in international football.
“Spain’s strength lies in their teamwork and possession.
Our style of play is slightly different, based on transitions, although we’re keen to have the ball tomorrow to force them into mistakes.
“Against Spain, you can’t let them have the ball for the full 90 minutes because, in the end, they’ll find spaces and wear you down,” explained the Barcelona defender.
