Julien Lachuer will replace Éric Roy as Stade Brestois head coach next season, following Roy’s death from pancreatic cancer on 17 June. The long-serving assistant steps up from within.
Facing uncertainty around their coach’s illness, the club had been weighing an internal route for sporting and financial reasons, with Champions League 2024-25 income dwindling and television rights money reduced. According to L'Équipe, they are also seeking new investors.
Hiring externally would likely cost more, and many coaches travel with full staffs. Brest already have Bruno Grougi contracted until 2027, plus fitness coaches Yvan Bourgis and Anthony Grech-Angelini and goalkeeping coach Olivier Blondel.
Lachuer, 49, kept goal for Brest from 2005 to 2010, then coached keepers in 2010-2012 and 2013-2022. With Grougi and Bourgis he led the interim after Michel Der Zakarian was sidelined in October 2022, returning 2 wins, 1 draw and 4 defeats, before serving as Roy’s assistant.
The club chose him, ahead of Grougi, to enrol on the BEPF. He impressed and graduated in May 2025, and had said he wanted to be an active, hands-on assistant.
He takes charge on 2 July to start pre-season. He inherits an eighth straight top-flight campaign to protect, a club record, and Brest have yet to replace sporting director Grégory Lorenzi, who left for Marseille.
