In a city where football is often a matter of identity rather than mere sport, few figures have left as enduring a mark as Jurgen Klopp. The former Liverpool manager may have handed the reins to Arne Slot — who remarkably guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut campaign — but Klopp’s commitment to Liverpool stretches far beyond the technical area.
Klopp returned to Merseyside for the first time since his emotional departure in May 2024. While his presence at Anfield for the season finale stirred nostalgia among fans, it was his actions off the pitch that once again defined the man behind the success.
Jurgen Klopp’s return was timed with the Liverpool FC Foundation Gala Ball, an evening designed to celebrate the club’s charitable arm. Yet, this wasn’t just a ceremonial visit. Klopp, now serving as the Foundation’s first honorary ambassador, arrived with intent — and a generous gesture that underlines his bond with both club and city.
It was revealed that Klopp made a personal donation of €100,000 (approximately £83,900) to the Liverpool FC Foundation. The Foundation’s chief executive, Matt Parish, spoke warmly about Klopp’s continued commitment:
“Before he left we were speaking to him about the ambassador role and that he wanted to do something.”
This wasn’t a hollow title or a symbolic appointment. Klopp, in his typical straightforward manner, wanted no frills or fanfare.
“First thing he said was he doesn’t want his name on the door, ‘I want to do stuff for you, I do want to come back and see games but I want to come back with another purpose as well’,” said Parish.
The donation has already begun to make a real difference. A portion of the funds was directed towards providing food support during school holidays — a pressing issue Klopp was vocal about during his managerial stint.
“We have used some of it already for food support during the school holidays and then will use the rest for something similar,” Parish confirmed. “He was passionate about that area of work when he was here, so we thought that was the right area to use it for.”

It is this kind of initiative that showcases the ethos of the Liverpool FC Foundation, a body dedicated to changing lives through sport, education, and community engagement. Klopp’s involvement adds weight, credibility, and authenticity to its work.
Those who know Klopp well will be unsurprised by the manner of the donation. Quietly made, with little interest in publicity, it mirrors the values he instilled at Liverpool — humility, collective effort, and purpose.
“Classic Jurgen,” said Parish. “He looks super fit, super tanned and looks relaxed… he has a connection with people, doesn’t he?”
Even in retirement, Klopp’s energy and charisma haven’t dimmed. He reportedly told Parish he’s spending his time playing sport and working with a personal trainer — a far cry from the relentless touchline presence that once prowled Anfield.
Arne Slot, speaking ahead of the final match of the season against Crystal Palace, confirmed Klopp’s return to the stands.
“I’ve heard he’s there, yeah. Nice,” Slot remarked. “Proud, special, but I think proud sums [my emotions] up the most… it’s the hardest trophy to win.”
In many ways, Slot’s triumph with Liverpool is part of Klopp’s enduring legacy. The infrastructure, mentality, and ethos instilled under Klopp set the stage for future success. But now, Klopp’s impact expands into the community, reaffirming that his influence at Liverpool is far from over.
Whether it was guiding Liverpool to domestic and European glory, or contributing to the lives of its most vulnerable, Klopp’s chapter at the club remains one of passion, integrity, and generosity. And as the Foundation continues its work under his watchful, if informal, eye, the city knows that once a Red — always a Red.
