Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was briefly subject to transfer interest from abroad this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Juventus considered the Everton shot-stopper as they looked to provide competition for Michele Di Gregorio before they turned their attention elsewhere.

Pickford has been fantastic for Everton over the past few seasons, earmarking himself as one of the most consistent performers in the team.

He kept 11 clean sheets in 38 Premier League appearances this season to help the Toffees finish in 13th place (+2.77 goals prevented).

It was a disappointing finish, given the initial optimism, but he remained one of the team’s consistently bright spots.

Pickford has now completed three successive seasons between the sticks without being dropped in the league.

The 32-year-old signed a new deal, keeping him at the Hill Dickinson Stadium until 2029, and it is quite surprising that the Italians ever felt they stood a chance.

Pickford is currently in North America with the England national team, and when he returns, he will remain the first choice heading into next season.

However, Everton’s bigger issue may not be Pickford’s future, but rather who sits behind him.

The club only signed Mark Travers last summer, yet reports suggest the Republic of Ireland international is already keen to move on in search of regular football.

It is hardly surprising.

Pickford has missed virtually no league action in recent years, making opportunities for any understudy extremely limited. That leaves Everton in a tricky position.

If Travers departs, they will need another reliable deputy, but convincing a goalkeeper of sufficient quality to join, knowing they are unlikely to play, is no easy task.

Pickford’s durability and status as both Everton and England’s undisputed No. 1 make the role particularly unattractive.

It is an unusual balancing act to find someone who can step up when needed and also accept life almost exclusively on the bench for as long as Pickford stays.
