Juventus offloaded two expensive flops during the summer, Douglas Luiz and Nicolas Gonzalez, but there’s a non-zero chance they won’t join their current teams permanently, Nottingham Forest and Atletico Madrid. The conditions to trigger their obligations to buy are relatively easy but not stone-cold locks, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The Brazilian moved on a €3M loan. He needs to play at least 45 minutes in 15 matches for the Tricky Trees to be forced to redeem him for €25M. He didn’t have injury-related problems before moving to Turin. The midfielder starred in 50 out of 53 matches with Aston Villa. Instead, he suffered four separate muscular issues last season, which contributed to his demise. He has yet to debut after three Premier League tilts. His side has already gone through a coach change, firing Nuno Espirito Santo and appointing Ange Postecoglou.
While Douglas Luiz is off to a slow start, Nicolas Gonzalez shone in his Atleti debut, getting the nod and scoring versus Villarreal, which should bode well for Juventus. He has to play at least a half in 21 out of 35 La Liga matches to activate his €32M clause. He made 22 appearances with Fiorentina in 2023/2024, while he tallied 23 with the Old Lady last year.
That’s the price to pay and risk you have to take when you swing and miss and decide to quickly get rid of players rather than trying to ride it out. There probably weren’t better deals out there. It’d still be a little surprising if they headed back. They aren’t washed or poor, but they struggled to fit into a challenging situation.
