Sergio Conceicao started his Milan adventure on the right foot as the Rossoneri came from behind at the Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh to beat Juventus 2-1 in the second Supercoppa Semi Final. Milan’s new Portuguese coach thus treated himself to an exciting Derby della Madonnina clash against Inter next Monday in the last act of this edition of the Italian Supercup.
Juventus paid a harsh price for two individual mistakes after Kenan Yildiz had fired the Bianconeri upfront in the first half. Christian Pulisic equalized from the spot for Milan on 71 minutes after Manuel Locatelli naively pushed him down in the box. Four minutes later, Fabrizio Gatti deflected the ball into his own goal in an attempt to intercept a Yunus Musah cross from the right flank.
Juve thus conceded their first loss against an Italian side this season. It came at the end of a bizarre game, which the Old Lady dominated in the first half but failed to put to bed as Dusan Vlahovic and Yildiz both had chances to score early after the restart.
Pulisic’s converted penalty revitalized the Rossoneri and they made it two shortly after as Gatti’s unluckly deflection turned Musah into an unexpected match winner. Milan’s performance was not exactly brilliant, but that was enough for the Milanese side to set their 2025 off to a good start.
Conceicao’s Milan struggled to find their edge during the initial 45 minutes. Their new coach asked them to press harder and higher but, after an encouraging start, it was Juve to take control of the operations.
The Bianconeri lost Francisco Conceicao to an injury during warm-up, depriving the match of a mouth-watering clash between the young Portuguese talent and his father Sergio. To replace him, Thiago Motta deployed Yildiz as right winger and the Turkish starlet promptly repaid his gaffer’s trust.
On 21 minutes, Samuel Mbangula picked him with a sharp pass through. It looked like it could be easy prey for Theo Hernandez, but the Rossonero confirmed his poor run of form as he missed the clearance and let Yildiz free to fire the ball past Mike Maignan at the near post.
Milan’s first shot came only on 42 minutes but Michele Di Gregorio had no problems in blocking Youssouf Fofana’s attempt.
After Yildiz and Vlahovic missed back-to-back chances to double Juve’s lead, the match changed face as Sergio Conceicao introduced Musah to replace Ismael Bennacer who was struggling at midfield.
Before the former Valencia man would put his stamp on the game though, it was Locatelli to gift-wrap Milan a gigantic chance to put themselves back on track. Locatelli tripped Pulisic on the edge of the Bianconeri‘s area and Captain America made no mistake from the penalty spot with a fine shot that Di Gregorio only managed to touch.
Four minutes later, Alvaro Morata ignited Musah’s progression along the right flank with a perfectly timed pass. Musah went for a cross in the middle of the box, but found Gatti’s deflection along the way, which caught Di Gregorio off position.
Sergio Conceicao understood he was getting more than what he deserved and wisely switched to a five-man defense, adding Matteo Gabbia to the mix. It was Gabbia, the hero of the most recent Derby di Milano, to save the day for the Rossoneri as he blocked with his body Gatti’s last gasp shot during Juventus’ final onslaught into Milan’s area.
It was a debut to remember for Conceicao and a night of torment for Thiago Motta, who will likely be questioned for his untimely substitutions. Motta pulled out Vlahovic after just 65 minutes, along with Samuel Mbangula. But while Vlahovic had been wasteful tonight, the Belgian talent was being one of Juve’s most dangerous men, wreaking havoc on the left attacking side. Thiago Motta’s Juventus continues to be a somewhat convoluted experiment.
