Celtic's took a long trip to Kazakhstan but will return home disappointed after a penalty shoot-out saw Brendan Rodger's side out of the Champions League.
The first leg in Glasgow was far from a spectacle and there was no improvement from a Celtic point of view in this game.
Kairat were disciplined and compact but for the most part comfortable against the visiting side's attacks.
Celtic's performance was summed up in the second half when Callum McGregor's terrible back pass to Kasper Schmeichel forced the goalkeeper to use his hands to prevent an own goal.
The result was an in-direct freekick for Kairat on the edge of the six-yard box. The Celtic wall managed to block and survive a potential penalty shout out for Kairat after an arm looked to have stopped the shot.
Daizen Maeda had the best chance for Celtic during the 90 minutes but saw his shot fly over.
Extra-time saw little improvement besides some late pressure for Celtic but goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov and his defence were able to keep the Bhoys at bay.
At just 21, Anarbekov is not even Kairat's first-choice in net but he became the hero in the shoot-out, stopping penalties from Adam Idah, Luke McCowan, and Maeda to send his side into the Champions League league stage – a historic achievement for the club.
The rest of the competition won't be happy considering the air miles they will need to amass for an away visit to face Kairat but they deserved it over the two legs.
Indeed, now is a time for self-reflection at Celtic and to find a solution to the current malaise with Rangers and now the Europa League ahead.
