Ruben Amorim’s reluctance to hand Senne Lammens a Premier League start suggests the Belgian goalkeeper might not have been his preferred signing.

United waited until deadline day to agree deal with Royal Antwerp for their highly-rated goalkeeper, who was reportedly not scouted with the expectation of becoming the side’s number one goalkeeper from the get-go.

Despite Altay Bayındır’s shaky performances, Amorim has continued to rely on the Turkish goalkeeper, who spent nearly the entirety of his first two seasons at the club on the bench as Andre Onana’s understudy.

Much has been written about United’s interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma and Emiliano Martinez during the summer transfer window. Now, it has emerged that the Premier League giants also tried to sign another goalkeeper before Lammens.

Manchester United tried to sign Santos

According to Bild, United considered the possibility of signing Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kauã Santos towards the end of the window.

It is understood the 22-year-old Brazilian was on United’s radar last year as well.

This summer, United were reportedly “willing to put €25-30m on the table” to sign the Eintracht shot-stopper.

However, their attempts were snubbed by both the player and the Bundesliga outfit.

The youngster intends to continue in Germany at this stage of his career, with his contract in Frankfurt due to expire in 2030.

Eintracht have ambitious plans

Eintracht are hoping to make €60m from Santos’ sale in the future, having signed him from Flamengo in 2023.

United might reignite their interest in Santos in the upcoming transfer windows.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United have “prioritised a major goalkeeper signing next year” as Amorim still doesn’t have an outright number one keeper.
