Kenny McLean announces his stance on joining Rangers

Kenny McLean to Rangers has been a long-standing rumour, one borne of a lot of agent talk specifically leaking ‘interest’ to the media in order to get his client a new contract at Carrow Road.

That’s what transpired in 2023, when the stories were heavy that McLean wasn’t remaining in Norwich and would switch to Ibrox, only for bosses to offer him a new deal.

And frankly it’s happened again in the summer, with McLean confirming he had no real interest in leaving Norwich once the new boss was in place.

Indeed, we can confirm that’s not exactly true, sources close to the club and player told us a move to Sheffield United was very, very much on at the time, with Rangers’ interest lurking in the background.

But McLean has confirmed, more or less, than he’s going to stay at Carrow Road for a fair old time yet:

“Not too much (in the Rangers story) that needed spoken about, to be honest. The manager was in the door a couple of weeks and I had a conversation with him. He’d made it quite clear publicly that he wanted young players. And I didn’t quite fit that bracket. But when I spoke to him he knew he needed some experience about the place and I’ve been there a long time. He told me I was still a big part of the plan. So for me that was me secure and getting my head down at Norwich and not really focusing on elsewhere. It was resolved pretty quickly.”

Very much akin in 2023’s story really, where despite McLean’s past quotes confirming he’d love to play for Rangers one day, the 32-year-old and his agent seem determined to use Rangers to improve his working conditions, minutes, and contract at Carrow Road.

We don’t deny he’s a Rangers man through and through, and did of course come through Rangers’ youth program back in the day, but clearly he wants to save his homecoming for when he’s no longer good/young enough for the Championship, let alone the Premiership.

That said, Rangers fans generally really don’t rate him at all, so very few probably mind he’s coming nowhere near Ibrox as a player any time soon.
