Kevin Keegan, who died on Monday aged 75 from cancer, left Liverpool for Hamburg, where he spent three seasons.
According to L'Équipe, his move to Hamburg mirrored a route taken by the Beatles.
In August 1960 the Beatles drove from Liverpool to Hamburg hoping to make money by playing nightly club shows.
17 years later Keegan headed the same way, in very different circumstances, likewise seeking better pay.
A vivid snapshot shows Keegan with Rudi Kargus after Hamburg beat Real Madrid 5-1 in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final on 23 April 1980.
In Hamburg he initially found adaptation hard, then the crowd came to revere him.
