Liverpool’s Champions League campaign begins under the Anfield lights with a clash against Atlético Madrid, a meeting that carries intrigue and history in equal measure. Arne Slot’s side enter this contest unbeaten since their Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace in August and will want to make a statement in Europe after last season’s round-of-16 exit.
Slot’s Liverpool have been relentless domestically, taking maximum points in the Premier League and coming off a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Burnley. That late win at Turf Moor reflected a team that is learning to grind out results, a quality that will be needed against Diego Simeone’s well-drilled Atlético.

Liverpool are chasing a seventh European crown and, given their early-season form, there is belief that they can be a force once again. “Liverpool are gunning for a seventh European crown this year, having been knocked out in the last 16 by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain last term,” underlining the sense of unfinished business on Merseyside.
The major talking point ahead of kick-off is whether Alexander Isak will finally make his long-awaited debut. His £125 million transfer from Newcastle was one of the sagas of the summer, with the Reds eventually landing their man in a record deal. Isak missed the trip to Burnley due to match fitness but is in the squad for this crucial group-stage tie.
Curtis Jones remains absent with an injury, while several of Liverpool’s summer recruits could feature in Europe for the first time. Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Giovanni Leoni all offer Slot fresh options as he seeks to rotate intelligently across competitions.

Atlético arrive with injury concerns of their own. Julian Alvarez was forced off with a knee problem at the weekend, while David Hancko and Robin Le Normand also picked up knocks. Nico Gonzalez, who found the net against Villarreal, was withdrawn with cramp. Simeone is already without Jose Maria Gimenez, Thiago Almada and Alex Baena, leaving the visitors short in key areas.

Atlético’s form has been mixed, with just one win in four La Liga matches, but they remain one of the most tactically disciplined teams in Europe. Their record against Liverpool under Simeone is balanced, with three wins each and two draws across their previous meetings.

History suggests this will be a physical, tense encounter. “The last two times these teams met, the La Liga outfit had a man sent off, with Felipe dismissed in a 2-0 defeat at Anfield back in November 2021, before Antoine Griezmann saw red in the reverse group stage fixture at the Estadio Metropolitano, where Liverpool emerged 3-2 victors.”
Slot will be wary of Atlético’s ability to frustrate opponents, but with Anfield behind them, Liverpool will expect to dictate the tempo and create chances.
This is a match that sets the tone for Liverpool’s European campaign. With confidence high and a strengthened squad, the expectation is for a strong start. “Off form alone, this should be a routine Liverpool victory, but Atletico are always a tricky customer in the Champions League,”
The prediction is Liverpool 2-1 Atlético Madrid, a result that would underline their status as contenders and provide a platform for another deep run in the competition.
