Kick It Out have accused José Mourinho of gaslighting over his response to the alleged racism incident involving Prestianni and Vinícius Júnior during Benfica’s meeting with Real Madrid at Estádio da Luz.

The organisation said in a statement that when someone reports discrimination, the first priority is for that person to be heard and supported. It argued that dwelling on Vinícius Júnior’s goal celebration or a club’s history instead of acknowledging the complaint amounts to “gaslighting”, harming the individual and sending the wrong message to others worldwide.

It added that football’s leaders play a crucial role in setting standards, and that moments like this require responsible leadership that reinforces respect, inclusion and accountability. The body said it looks forward to a thorough investigation into the incident, with responsibility linked to the outcome.

After the match, Mourinho questioned why Vinícius chose to provoke the Benfica support after scoring a stunning goal, invoking the joyful celebrations of Eusébio, Di Stéfano and Pelé.

Benfica visit Real Madrid on 25 February at 20:00 at the Bernabéu. The match will decide who reaches the last 16 of Europe’s leading club competition and will be shown on Sport TV5.
