Kieran McKenna says referees’ body PGMO accepted that Ipswich should have been awarded two penalties in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Leicester City. The admission followed complaints over a late incident involving Hamza Choudhury and Cedric Kipre.
The Ipswich head coach said assistant Martyn Pert had spoken with Kevin Friend about the decisions, adding: "Yes, there's full admission that there should have been two penalties, one on Anis (Mehmeti) and certainly the one at the end." He told the EADT.
McKenna said everyone was disappointed but there was no time to dwell, with Stoke City away on Tuesday. He stressed he is not an advocate for VAR, yet felt this call was unusually poor given the moment and its relative simplicity.
Immediately after the match he was stronger still, singling out referee John Busby. He argued Dara O’Shea’s delivery into the six-yard box was where officials should have been looking and that Kipre was clearly fouled.
Gary Rowett downplayed the incidents, noting the magnitude of such a late decision and the grappling that occurs at set plays. He suggested his side were also being held at the back post during corners.
