According to ExpressAndStar.com, Kieran Trippier is set for a Wolves medical next week, a move that should make him the club’s first summer signing.
Wolves opened talks with the former England international last month after his Newcastle exit at the end of his contract. Head coach Rob Edwards and chairman Nathan Shi were central to selling the Wolves project, and Trippier told the club last week he wanted to join.
A two-year deal has been agreed, with an option of a third, for the defender who turns 36 in September. He is expected to sign his contract once back from his post-season holiday.
Trippier is expected to compete with Pedro Lima for the right-back spot, with the 19-year-old Brazilian set to learn from his experience. Lima was recalled from his Porto loan in January and, despite several offers including Championship sides, Edwards kept him with the first team and gave him 10 appearances in the second half of the season.
Those minutes included Premier League starts against Spurs, Sunderland and Brighton towards the end of the campaign. Edwards wants to switch to a back four next term, with Trippier and Lima the main senior options at right-back, Jackson Tchatchoua and Ki-Jana Hoever likely to depart and Rodrigo Gomes expected to play further forward.
The prospective signing has been welcomed by most supporters, who point to Trippier’s leadership and experience as qualities the squad needs during a summer rebuild.
