Despite the clear 6:1 first-leg victory against Atalanta Bergamo, Vincent Kompany is taking an unusually serious tone ahead of the second leg of the Champions League tie. The Bayern coach warns against the Italian opponents – and demands full concentration from his team
The starting position seems comfortable, but Kompany has no intention of taking the clash lightly. On the contrary: the 39-year-old is expecting a completely different match to the one a week ago
The Belgian emphasized that the first leg should not be used as a benchmark, as he believes Atalanta did not show their usual form there. „It’s very difficult to assess how they will come. Only the opposing coach can answer that,“ explained Kompany at the final press conference
The Italians‘ recent performance against Inter Milan in particular showed the team’s potential: „They were stable and dangerous and very unpleasant.“
Kompany therefore consciously categorized the clear 6:1: „It was rather atypical against us – they are not a team that concedes a lot of goals.“
In view of the clear lead, the Bayern coach also made it unmistakably clear that there is no room for carelessness. „That’s my role in this situation, I want to set an example – but we also have to show that on the pitch,“ said the FCB coach
The mission statement is clear: maximum intensity, great willingness to run and the right attitude. Kompany sees the support of the fans in particular as an important factor: „75,000 people come to the stadium and want to support the team.“
Kompany also underlined the record champions‘ own ambition, which is to confirm their current run – and not just in the Champions League. „We’ve put a lot of effort into building momentum,“ emphasized the coach, referring to the recent Bundesliga match in Leverkusen, which he rated as positive despite the 1:1 draw
His message is clear: „We have no room to go into a game too relaxed, we don’t want that.“
Finally, Kompany made it clear that no experiments are planned, even in a seemingly decided duel. „We don’t play friendly matches,“ he made clear
The Bayern coach thus sent a clear signal to his team: even with a comfortable lead, only one thing counts – another win and a confident confirmation of their top form.
