Celtic pushed hard to bringTierney back to the club but it has now been confirmed that the player will NOT be allowed to leave Arsenal early to join up with his old club. Instead Arsenal will insist that he sees out the remaining five months of his contract before heading North to join Celtic as per his pre-contract agreement that was confirmed earlier this week.

Arsenal will NOT allow KT to return to Celtic in January window

As it stands, that one is NOT happening as a loan move in January and  Celtic have started to sound out alternatives, as we reported on The Celtic Star this morning.

The boyhood Hoops supporter left the club way back in 2019 to join the Emirates outfit in a £25 million deal, which was record-breaking at that time. It was a crushing blow to the club at the time as Tierney was a generational talent who had drawn comparisons to Danny McGrain and many had thought he was a stick-on to get that armband from Scott Brown one day.

The £25m Celtic received for KT helped fund a transfer spree

However, the allure of the Premier League and the money on offer to both him and Celtic was an opportunity that couldn’t be denied. The funds from Kieran’s move also helped fund Neil Lennon’s transfer plans that summer and ensured we remained on a solid financial footing, as we failed to make the UEFA Champions League group stages on that occasion.

Commons himself was a popular Celtic player

Kris Commons, a Celtic player who is fondly remembered too, reckons that Tierney will be the captain one day if he can stay injury-free and fit. Speaking to PLZ Soccer, he said: “I think between 27 and 31, you would say that your body is at optimum, peak performance. Experience, just the knowledge of the game. The understanding, the tactical side. And knowing exactly whereabouts your supposed to be on the field and your role off it.

“I know that Kieran Tierney will probably be a captain in the making. I know that that’s something he’s certainly played a bit-part in. But yeah, I think Kieran Tierney will be a captain of the future.

Younger players will look up to KT

“If he keeps himself fit and plays week-in week-out, there’s no question. For the young team coming through at the moment. You know 15, 16, 17-year-old lads that have got aspirations to play for Celtic’s first-team, Kieran Tierney will be a player you will be looking up to and trying to emulate what he’s achieved these last ten-years.”

It’s frustrating that Arsenal have blocked KT’s Celtic return but he is their player and we can console ourselves in the knowledge that Tierney will return to Celtic for next season.
