Real Sociedad’s Take Kubo has sustained a left knee injury at the 2026 World Cup. According to AS, an MRI has confirmed the problem and he is now considered unlikely to feature again in the group stage.
Kubo was forced off on Monday in the 75th minute of Japan’s match against the Netherlands after a knee-on-knee collision with Dutch defender Dumfries.
He was later seen moving with difficulty around the stadium, at times in a wheelchair. Speaking to reporters, he said he did not really know what had happened and felt he had been grabbed from all sides.
He is not expected to leave the camp, but he cannot train at present and there are doubts over his involvement in the two remaining group games. Japan’s next fixture is against Tunisia on Sunday 21 June at six in the morning.
It would be another setback for Kubo, who was injured for Real Sociedad in January against Barcelona at Anoeta. On 18 January, with Pellegrino Matarazzo in the dugout, he suffered a significant muscle tear that sidelined him for several matches. He returned on 26 March, struggled for sharpness in the run-in, and was a substitute in the Copa del Rey final.
