Kylian Mbappé struck from the spot to give France the lead against Paraguay in the World Cup last 16, converting a 65th-minute penalty won by Désiré Doué.

Le Progres reports that France had been held at bay by Paraguay’s compact low block from the start, and were unsettled for over an hour.

Doué’s introduction energised the attack, his slaloming run into the box drawing a trip to the ankle. After a VAR intervention, the penalty was awarded.

Paraguay tried to delay and unsettle Mbappé as he prepared to take the kick, with team-mates, notably Ousmane Dembélé, shielding their captain. Five minutes passed between the foul and the goal, but Mbappé calmly beat Orlando Gill.

The strike was his seventh of the tournament, taking the France captain level with Lionel Messi at the top of the World Cup scoring chart.
