Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe made the difference for his France side in their Round of 32 World Cup clash with Paraguay, scoring the penalty that separated the two sides. In a bad-tempered game, Mbappe’s side came out on top, in his view, for their ability to play ugly football.
Paraguay were centred on halting France’s advances, and for the most part did so, until Desire Doue was brought down in the box in the second half, and Mbappe slotted the penalty in the net. The most commented part of the match was Paraguay’s physical approach and the permissiveness of the referee though. Paraguay finished the match without a booking, while France were handed three, despite the seeming difference in physicality. France were also without Aurelien Tchouameni, who missed the game due to a minor knock.
Speaking after the match, Mbappe put Les Bleus victory down to their ability to handle a different kind of game to the one they were used to.
“We knew what kind of match we were in for. If we had to get our hands in the s***, pardon the expression. we were going to get our hands in the s***. They thought we’d show up in tuxedos and play pretty one-twos, but we know how to play ugly football, too. That’s their game. It doesn’t bother us, and we won. We were the better team,” he said in a flash interview after the match, as quoted by Cadena SER.
For the most part, Mbappe kept his cool against the constant provocations of the Paraguayan defence, and in the final moments, was laughing at their defenders as a corner was about to be taken. He got into a few verbals exchanges too.
At the final whistle, he was certainly keen to get revenge though, roaring at the crowd following the final whistle. Paraguay goalkeeper Oscar Gill went to shake his hand, but Mbappe was still celebrating, and Gill ended up tossing the ball at him.
