LaLiga has suspended Rayo Vallecano v Real Oviedo, the matchday 23 Primera División fixture set for Saturday 7 February at 14:00 at Vallecas, citing the unsafe state of the pitch to protect player safety.

The league said in a statement that the turf failed to meet safety guarantees, despite Rayo replacing the entire surface this week. It noted adverse weather during the works and forecasts of continued rain, and said all options were explored.

A note from Rayo Vallecano’s players and coaching staff, issued via the AFE union, criticised neglect of the Vallecas facilities in recent times. They argued the pitch does not meet minimum standards for a top-flight game.

Real Oviedo responded that they understand the health-based reasons for the suspension and expressed support for Rayo’s squad and staff. They also voiced dissatisfaction, calling the situation a clear detriment to the club, sporting, organisational and financial, after team and fans travelled to Madrid.

Under competition rules, a window will be set to present proposals for a new date for the fixture.
