Lamine Yamal suffered a left thigh injury while converting a penalty in Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Celta Vigo on Wednesday. The club said in a statement that he will miss the rest of the season.
The 18-year-old was withdrawn soon after scoring from the spot. He has a biceps femoris muscle injury in his left thigh.
He should still be available for this summer’s World Cup in North America, from 11 June to 19 July, with Spain. He will undergo conservative treatment without surgery to be ready for the opener on 15 June against Cape Verde.
Already hampered early in the campaign by pubalgia, the left-footer finished second in the Ballon d’Or last season and is again a contender. This term he leads Barcelona with 24 goals and 20 assists in all competitions.
His build-up to the tournament will now be adjusted, with rehabilitation set to shape a different preparation than first planned.
