FC Augsburg secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over VfL Wolfsburg in a fiercely contested Bundesliga clash, with former Wolfsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj scoring a stoppage-time winner to silence the home crowd.
Augsburg surprised many before kickoff by starting Rodrigo Ribeiro up front instead of Michael Gregoritsch and the visitors began the match with confidence and discipline. They nearly took the lead in the 10th minute when a corner caused chaos in the Wolfsburg box, and captain Yannick Gerhardt inadvertently deflected the ball toward his own goal, only for it to bounce off the crossbar.
The visitors continued to impress with their compact defensive shape and aggressive pressing, making it difficult for Wolfsburg to find any attacking rhythm. Clear chances remained rare and both teams struggled to produce fluent offensive sequences.
Despite the lack of opportunities, Wolfsburg found a breakthrough in the 41st minute through a set piece. Christian Eriksen’s well-delivered corner found Gerhardt, who rose high and headed the ball into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead and atone for his earlier scare.
Both sides emerged from halftime with greater urgency, and Augsburg’s bold selection choice soon paid off. Ribeiro, making his first start, found himself unmarked in front of goal and calmly finished to bring Augsburg level.
Wolfsburg responded by shifting their focus to counterattacks, a strategy that paid dividends in the 71st minute. Amoura led a swift forward run and delivered a dangerous cross that substitute Shiogai converted, restoring the hosts’ advantage.
The closing stages brought drama and controversy. In the 85th minute, Wolfsburg defender Denis Vavro conceded a penalty after handling a cross with his arm raised. The incident sparked heated confrontations between players, with tensions boiling over as Gregoritsch prepared to take the spot kick. After the situation was brought under control, Gregoritsch confidently converted the penalty to make it 2-2.
Just as the match seemed destined to end level, Augsburg delivered the decisive moment in the 94th minute. Elvis Rexhbecaj, facing his former club, seized his opportunity and found the back of the net to complete Augsburg’s comeback and secure a stunning late victory.
It was a bitter ending for Wolfsburg, who had twice held the lead but ultimately could not withstand Augsburg’s persistence. For the visitors, Rexhbecaj’s dramatic winner capped a resilient and determined performance, sealing a memorable night and a crucial three points on the road.
