The Hoops boss revealed that the Borussia Mönchengladbach attacker was completed his medical during his media conference last night as part of a proposed loan move to the Hoops.

The agreement is expected to be a loan deal, with a clause allowing Celtic to convert the deal into a permanent transfer if certain conditions are met.

When asked about Cvancara, O’Neill replied via Celtic’s official YouTube channel: “I think pretty close now, as we speak, he is doing his medical. I think things are going pretty well.”

O’Neill moved to clarify the striker’s profile, explaining that Cvancara does not fit the mould of a conventional target striker.

The interim Celtic boss also urged caution over the level of expectation surrounding the potential addition, emphasising that no player can instantly resolve every issue facing the squad.

O’Neill said: “He’s not a target man. He’s quite quick. He’s not the John Hartson type or I suppose Chris Sutton alongside Henrik Larsson. He’s quick, he’s agile, and he wants to prove himself.”

“If you think he is the immediate answer to any sort of problem we have, I’m not sure about that. I don’t want to throw that sort of responsibility on him.”

On facing Bologna tonight, O’Neill added: “Oh, I think this is a difficult game for us, first of all, away from home. So, it’ll be a difficult task. We’ve left ourselves an uphill task here in terms of results, but it’s up to us, we still have a chance.”

“From our viewpoint, we want to give it a go and that’s exactly what we’ll do. They have a very strong side themselves. And while I’d say that form might not be fantastic just in recent weeks, and we ourselves are trying to recover from that, but we have a chance. We must go on and try and take it if we can.”
