Lazio’s €19m shirt sponsorship with Polymarket is in jeopardy after the platform was banned in Italy for being deemed illegal gambling.

According to Football Italia, the Serie A club finally secured the agreement in April after years of difficulty landing a main shirt sponsor. The deal covers two seasons with an option for the 2028-29 campaign.

However, it may be scuppered before it properly begins, with Polymarket returned to the Customs and Monopolies Agency, ADM, list of blocked websites.

The prediction market is not authorised to provide services linked to public gambling in Italy. Last year there was a legal dispute in which the company argued it was not a traditional betting site, but an exchange where users trade odds.

It initially kept operating during an appeal, but in the past 24 hours Italian authorities have blocked it again.

The impact might not be limited to Lazio, as Polymarket also has a multi-year agreement with Lega Serie A for the US market, using official Serie A logos and trademarks on its American platform.
