Lazio are still keeping tabs on Girona stalwart Arnau Martinez, who has been on their shortlist since the January transfer window.
The Biancocelesti are bracing themselves for a major revamp in the backline. They have already secured the signature of Villarreal left-back Alfonso Pedraza, who will replace either Nuno Tavares or Luca Pellegrini. They’re also working on finalizing an agreement with Union Berlin centre-back Diogo Leite, who is also running on an expiring contract.
Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani must also address the right-back role, as Maurizio Sarri’s current options are all on the wrong side of 30. Elseid Hysaj will leave once his contract expires in June, but Adam Mausic has penned a renewal. Manuel Lazzari’s future remains uncertain, but the squad needs a younger alternative either way.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the Aquile are hoping to lure Arnau Martinez. The 22-year-old spent some time at Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, but he’s been at Girona since 2018. He is now considered the de facto captain on the pitch, as the official club captain, Cristhian Stuani, rarely starts matches nowadays.
Martinez mostly plays at right-back, but is also capable of interpreting other roles, including left-back, centre-back, and a winger. This season, he has made 27 appearances in all competitions, contributing with one goal and one assist.
As the Roman newspaper explains, his current market value is €14 million, but with his contract expiring in June 2027, the LaLiga club could decide to sell the Spain U21 international on a discount to avoid the risk of losing his services for free a year later.
