Leeds United bowed out of the Carabao Cup in Round Two after a defeat on penalties against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Ahead of the fixture, Daniel Farke made nine changes to his side from the Premier League defeat against Arsenal at the weekend.

Named in the starting XI for the first time in a competitive outing since arriving in the summer were Sean Longstaff, Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, Noah Okafor and Sebastiaan Bornauw.

When the teams emerged from the tunnel they were led out by Sam Byram, captaining the Whites for the first time in a proud moment for the experienced Thorp Arch Academy graduate.

The opening 20 minutes saw Farke’s side control the majority of the possession, with Nmecha testing Ethan Horvarth between the Wednesday posts on a couple of occasions.

As the half progressed, Horvarth continued to impress for the hosts. He saved well to deny Brenden Aaronson’s back-post effort before Okafor tested him with a curling strike from range.

The final chance of the half would go the way of the home side. After winning a free-kick 30-yards or so from goal, Jamal Lowe struck it and curled just past the post. The whistle then sounded shortly after.

Back out at Hillsborough for the second 45 minutes, no further changes were made on either side as both teams went in search of an opener under the lights in South Yorkshire.

Coming close, Byram connected well with a Jack Harrison corner but his goalbound header was hacked away off the line by a well-placed home defender.

Approaching the hour mark, Joel Piroe had curled a free-kick just wide and Aaronson saw one deflected behind but the scores remained level. The boss went to the bench, bringing on Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his debut alongside Willy Gnonto in a double change.

The hosts took the lead after 63 minutes of play. Having initially saved well from a first effort, Darlow saw Lowe’s follow up deflect off his boot and over the line.

Looking to respond quickly, Horvarth was forced to make an excellent double save from Leeds’ pressure. Okafor struck on target only to see the Owls ‘keeper save well, followed up with the same outcome moments later after Gnonto’s effort.

Fresh from the bench, Jayden Bogle came on and scored a well-crafted equaliser for the Whites. He linked up well with Gnonto in the box and seized his opportunity by sliding it under the stopper to level the scores.

Entering five minutes of stoppage time, two more subs linked up and came within inches of winning it. Anton Stach’s low free-kick was met by Calvert-Lewin but the striker turned it just wide of the post.

The full-time whistle sounded taking the tie to penalties at Hillsborough where Horvarth’s impressive evening continued, saving twice to help the hosts progress.
