Leeds United are prioritising an attacking midfielder or playmaker in January, and Chris Wilder’s stance could open the door to Gus Hamer.

Chelsea duo Tyrique George and Raheem Sterling have been linked, and Leeds have enquired about Manchester United fringe player Joshua Zirkzee. A summer move for Harry Wilson also failed.

Leeds have long admired Hamer, who pipped Dan James to last season’s Championship Player of the Season. He has not hit top form this term and is entering the final 18 months of his contract. Wilder wants to keep him but accepts a sale is possible at the right price.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen in January. I’d like to keep all the players that we’ve talked about, and get to a situation where, at the end of the season, we are just adding sort of two or three.” He told the Sheffield Star.

“Keeping our best players. But if that time comes, if somebody comes in with an offer that we can’t refuse, we’ve got to put that to the board and see where we are from that.”

Hamer has lately been a rotational option at Bramall Lane, and January may be the last chance to secure full value. In Daniel Farke’s first summer Leeds made a £13m bid.

Whether Leeds move for the Brazil-born midfielder is unclear, but their need for creativity means they are likely to monitor developments.
