Leeds pubs could stay open until two am during World Cup knockout matches if England progress, after Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood approved extended hours for the knockout rounds, provided any of the home nations make it through the group stage.

Late kick-offs are expected because of the time difference. The Sun reports that venues will be able to apply for a temporary licence for any matches likely to finish beyond two am.

This summer’s tournament begins on June 11 and will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Mahmood said the aim is to avoid last orders being called before decisive moments, and that red tape is being eased so supporters can stay for another round without missing any action.

England and Scotland have already qualified. Wales or Northern Ireland could still join them via the play-offs.
