Leeds pubs are gearing up for a World Cup surge, with packed houses and big atmospheres expected as the tournament starts today in Canada, the US and Mexico. England begin on June 17 and optimism is building across the city.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, venues from Meanwood to the city centre to Garforth have seen weeks of rising demand, with bookings filling fast. Landlords say the tournament brings people together and creates shared memories.

At the Beck and Call on Stainbeck Road, manager Nikki Grover expects a full house for England’s opener and calls the vibe a ‘fan-park feel without the chaos’. Indoor and outdoor screens have made it a go-to, and a sports menu, drinks deals, including two for £13.95 cocktails, a sweepstake and a World Cup quiz are planned.

In the city centre, The Brotherhood has built a festival-style programme since February, with confetti cannons, live music, Mariachi bands, matchday magazines and a special menu. Every game will be shown, and pints of Stella and Guinness will be priced at four pounds during Scotland matches.

In Garforth, The Gaping Goose landlady Joanne ‘Jo’ Heywood says the World Cup brings strangers together to cheer and make friends. She is skipping themed nights to let the football lead, but is bullish about England’s prospects, saying, ‘Absolutely we will win it this year’.
