Daniel Farke suggested James Maddison tried to win a late penalty off Lukas Nmecha with the score at 1-1, but VAR upheld Jarred Gillett’s on-field decision.
Earlier, VAR awarded Leeds a penalty for a foul on Ethan Ampadu. When Maddison went down under Nmecha’s challenge, the review found the Leeds attacker had played the ball and the call stood. According to Leedsunited.news, Farke framed it as savvy play rather than an outright accusation.
The Leeds manager, who coached Maddison in 49 games at Norwich City, said the midfielder is streetwise and knows how to gain advantages for his team, adding that the fall looked on the light side.
Spurs players surrounded Gillett after the incident. With two games left and the club still dangerously close to the relegation zone, the stakes were clear against a direct rival.
This was Maddison’s first appearance in 375 days following a serious ACL injury and he immediately sharpened Tottenham’s play. His passing quickened their attacks, movement between the lines improved and he demanded the ball in dangerous areas.
That impact is why the late appeal became a major talking point, although replays suggested the fall looked exaggerated. Moments before coming on, Maddison and Farke had shared a brief embrace, an awkward contrast with the controversy.
Farke’s remarks acknowledged the midfielder’s attempt to win a decisive moment for Tottenham without accusing him directly, and his return still offered Spurs encouragement amid a survival fight defined by fine margins.
