Some Leeds United supporters booed a first-half pause at Elland Road to allow Manchester City players to break their Ramadan fast, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.

The match on Saturday night, 28 February, was halted in the 11th minute after a big-screen message explained the protocol, and boos were audible before play resumed.

Manchester City won 1-0 with a 47th-minute goal by Antoine Semenyo.

During Ramadan, many Muslims fast between dawn and sunset, abstaining from food and drink.

Pep Guardiola urged respect for religion and diversity, and said the pause followed Premier League guidance allowing a brief stoppage for fasting players.

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out called the reaction massively disappointing and said such pauses have been in place for several years to help make football welcoming for Muslim players and communities.

Leeds United declined to comment, while assistant manager Eddie Riemer said he was disappointed by the incident and focused on the game.

The Football Association has been approached for comment.
