Leeds United are pursuing a World Cup centre-back after Pascal Struijk’s £20m move to Brighton, with Sassuolo’s Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic under consideration.

Fabrizio Romano reported Leeds had entered the race for Muharemovic. He also said Bournemouth and Sunderland had made calls in recent weeks, and that Juventus, his former club who retain a 50 per cent sell-on clause, needed to make a decision.

Muharemovic, 23, is six-foot-four and featured at this summer’s World Cup with Bosnia and Herzegovina. He played the full 1-1 group opener against Canada, then started against Switzerland and was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity with 10 minutes left. After a suspension for the group finale against Qatar, he returned to the starting line-up for the round of 32 against the USA and played the full match in a 2-0 defeat.

Leeds are also exploring a deal for 22-year-old Southampton midfielder Shea Charles. The Mail claimed positive talks were held over the weekend and that a decision was nearing.

Talks over Charles are ongoing and there is no update at this stage. Interest in Muharemovic remains at an early stage, with competition also in play.
