Leeds United forward Mateo Joseph has sent a heartfelt message to Mallorca after their final-day relegation, his season already ended by an ACL injury. The player said in a post that he wished to share his gratitude and emotions.
Mallorca beat already-relegated Real Oviedo 3-0 but results elsewhere and goal difference left Martín Demichelis' side 18th. Two teams above also finished on 42 points with superior goal difference, while three more ended on 43.
Joseph started 19 of the first 30 La Liga matches, with 10 further outings from the bench. He scored two goals and supplied four assists, the last in an April win over Real Madrid. That proved his final appearance before ACL surgery.
In his message he said he had felt part of the club and city from day one. He expressed regret at not finishing the campaign on the pitch, spoke of living every moment with the team, and backed Mallorca to return to where it belongs.
He thanked Pablo Ortells, Jagoba Arrasate and Demichelis, along with staff, team-mates, medical personnel and supporters, and suggested the setback could bring fans even closer to the club.
Joseph is due back at Leeds this summer with his future unclear. Last pre-season he told Daniel Farke he did not feel ready to travel to Sweden for a friendly against Manchester United, then chose not to join the Germany training camp. Leeds maintained only a loan would be considered for the 22-year-old, who has two years left on his Elland Road deal.
