Leeds United look set to clear Joel Piroe for a departure during the upcoming summer transfer window. The West Yorkshire club want to overhaul their attacking department. According to Pete O’Rourke on the Transfer Insider podcast, Leeds bosses want to recruit a fresh striker. This new signing will provide direct competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Piroe played a vital role in the club’s promotion charge last season. He won the Championship Golden Boot with 19 goals. However, he has found minutes remarkably hard to come by in the top flight.
O’Rourke suggests that securing Premier League survival will trigger a major summer signing spree. The frontline will be the main priority for new faces, regardless of Calvert-Lewin’s current form. The reporter highlighted that the board has already started internal talks regarding Piroe’s fit in the system, and this indicates a clear shift in strategy. The board are being ruthless with their approach as they want to cement their spot in the top flight by upgrading the squad. Consequently, the former Swansea City man is no longer needed, and this comes despite his heroics in the second tier just a year ago.
“If (Leeds) stay up this season, I’m sure they’ll be looking to build on what they’ve achieved, and they will be looking to bring in attacking reinforcements.
“There’s no doubt about that, because there’s speculation regarding the long-term future of Joel Piroe.
“I don’t think Calvert Lewin’s form or anything like that will have any major impact on Leeds’ plans.
“I think they’ll be looking to strengthen in all areas of the team, especially if they do secure Premier League survival.”

The decision to move on from the 26-year-old Dutchman reflects a tactical change. Current management now favours physical presence over poaching instincts. Throughout the 2025/26 campaign, Piroe has struggled to adapt to a high-pressing Premier League system. He often looks isolated when he leads the line alone. His clinical finishing remains his best trait. However, Pioroe’s lack of pace and limited aerial threat have made him a backup option. He now sits behind Calvert-Lewin in the pecking order.
Statistically, his contributions this season have dropped to short cameos. This has left the Dutchman frustrated on the bench during big games. Leeds United must compare the risk of losing a natural goalscorer. They need a mobile forward who can stretch Premier League defences. Although by selling Piroe, Leeds United will clear significant space on the wage bill. They can then chase a player who matches the high intensity of their midfield. This transition seems inevitable. The modern Premier League demands all-round strikers rather than traditional penalty-box predators.
