Ben Jacobs reports that Leeds United are set to pick up German striker Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer. Nmecha had been linked with a return to the country in which he played academy football for quite some time. The Wolfsburg striker is now on his way to Yorkshire after four injury-riddled seasons in the Bundesliga.
Recently, there had been some reports that the seven-times-capped German international might remain with Wolfsburg after all. Nmecha did net three league goals for the Lower Saxon Autostädter this year. This included a brace against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 17 and the match-winner against Gladbach on the season’s final matchday.
The 26-year-old nevertheless appears set on reviving his career elsewhere. Along with his younger brother Felix, who currently plays for Borussia Dortmund, Nmecha switched allegiances from England to Germany upon moving to Germany’s green company team. The two brothers have seen their careers take unexpected divergent paths.
Felix now maintains an estimated €28m market value and has been capped four times at German senior level. Lukas has not appeared for the German national team since shortly after his first major injury setback in autumn 2022. The older brother’s estimated market value has sunk from a peak of €18m to €3m.
