Gabriel Gudmundsson left the World Cup disappointed but heartened by the birth of his son, with the Leeds United defender set to return home after Sweden’s 3-0 round-of-32 defeat to France. His wife announced the arrival of Charlie just hours before kick-off.
“Yes, of course it is [mixed feelings]. I, like my family back home, had hoped for more, that we would continue this fantastic journey. But the positive thing is that I can let this go pretty quickly now.” He told Dagens Nyheter.
Sweden were knocked out on Tuesday in New Jersey by France. Gudmundsson started on the left of a back three, contained Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, and none of the goals arrived down his flank. Didier Deschamps could also call on Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise.
“France showed today why they are the best in the world and what quality they have. We knew it would be a tough task, but I think we can be proud too.”
Earlier, Leeds confirmed the £20million sale of Pascal Struijk to Brighton. Gudmundsson is now Daniel Farke’s only left-footed defender and coped relatively well in the role.
“I just want to give a big shout out to the wife back home who has been through this herself. Of course I can't wait to get home to her now.”
