According to PaponaColina, Renato Portaluppi’s arrival has jolted Vasco’s Brasileirão campaign, yielding seven points from three matches. The club had been in the relegation zone, and the surge has lifted them out, with eight points overall. Confidence has risen, notably for left-back Cuiabano.

The revival featured statement derby results. Vasco beat Palmeiras 2-1, ending an 11-year wait for a win over the São Paulo side, then came from behind to defeat Fluminense 3-2, with captain Thiago Mendes netting the decisive goal.

Cuiabano joined São Januário at the start of the year on loan from Nottingham Forest, a deal that runs to December. After a slow start, his last five outings have brought one goal and two assists.

The next fixture brings a reunion for the 23-year-old against Grêmio, the club that shaped his career. He spent more than 12 years there from the academy through to his 2024 exit.

His departure from Rio Grande do Sul came while Renato was in charge of Grêmio. Cuiabano moved to Botafogo, where he won the Libertadores and that season’s national title, yet he never fully nailed down an undisputed starting role at his previous clubs.

At Vasco he is enjoying his most consistent and prominent spell. He has overtaken Lucas Piton to own the left-back berth and is a key outlet in the team’s attacking patterns, forging a productive understanding with Andrés Gómez on the flank.
