Ruud van Nistelrooy has officially departed Leicester City by mutual consent after the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

The Dutchman’s departure comes more than two months after the Foxes’ fate was sealed with five games remaining in the 2024/25 campaign.

Van Nistelrooy took charge in November following Steve Cooper’s sacking, but failed to reverse the club’s downward trajectory.

Leicester won only four of the 25 league matches under his management and ended the season 13 points adrift of safety.

The drawn-out nature of his exit had been a point of confusion among supporters and pundits.

Leicester have delayed formal action due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) concerns, with the new accounting period beginning on July 1.

The 48-year-old thanked the staff, players and fans in a brief statement, expressing his appreciation for their support and professionalism during his time in the Midlands.

Leicester also praised Van Nistelrooy’s commitment and highlighted his role in promoting young talent from the club’s academy into the first team.

His tenure saw Leicester endure one of the worst home scoring droughts in top-flight history, going nine consecutive games without a goal at the King Power Stadium.

The club, now preparing for its second season in the Championship in three years, face additional uncertainty after being charged for alleged financial rule breaches during their last stint in the second tier.

No replacement has been announced, but former Everton and Burnley manager Sean Dyche is among those being considered.

Other names reportedly under review include Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, although the club has yet to confirm a shortlist.

First-team coaching staff will take temporary charge of pre-season training, which begins on Monday, while the search for a new manager continues.

Leicester begin their Championship campaign against Wednesday on August 10, and hope to have a new boss in place before then.
