The Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan played host to Barcelona on Sunday afternoon as the Catalans locked horns with Sevilla in their final game before the international break.

Coming off a gutting defeat to PSG midweek, Barcelona were expected to enter with intensity and a feeling of revenge to show that what happened against the European champions was a one-off.

What unfolded, however, was quite different as Barcelona were clearly second-best to the hosts for the better part of the game. The first half saw them outplayed as Sevilla went 2-0 up and only a moment of brilliance from Pedri and Marcus Rashford saw the Catalans pull one back.

The second half was better for Barcelona, but a missed penalty from Lewandowski made matters more complicated and Sevilla found a third to bury matters. A fourth in extra-time just made matters humiliating for the champions.

Barça Universal brings you the player ratings from Sevilla 4-1 Barcelona.

Wojciech Szczesny: 8

The Polish shot-stopper was Barcelona’s best player in the first half, and that in itself speaks volumes about how poor the Catalans were in the opening period.

Szczesny’s distribution on the night was decent and he showed good reflexes to prevent Sevilla from getting out of reach, for the scoreline could well have been far worse even before the half-time whistle.

Did well after the break but could not do anything about the two late goals as he was left alone to face the attackers.

Gerard Martin: 5.5

While Martin was defensively solid for Barcelona largely this season, even the youngster had an off day last night and looked leggy playing at left-back.

He lost possession regularly, struggled to maintain the high-line and was often left chasing on the counter.

Pau Cubarsi: 4

Barcelona’s centre-backs were simply disastrous in the opening half as they regularly allowed Sevilla to play through the offside trap and struggled to recover ground on the counter.

Cubarsi’s performance was nothing extraordinary on the defensive front as he struggled to hold his line for the greater part of the night. His distribution, however, was decent compared to the rest of the XI.

Ronald Araujo: 4

Araujo’s night was equally as poor as Cubarsi’s, if not slightly worse given that his passing also was under serious scrutiny as he regularly struggled to serve as part of the buildup.

The Uruguayan, who would have been expected to serve as an asset given his pace, still struggled against Sevilla’s counterattacks and looked far from his best.

Jules Kounde: 6

Kounde’s direct loss of possession led to Sevilla’s second goal on the night and it is safe to say that he looked lost in attack without Lamine Yamal and equally clueless in defence.

One of Kounde’s poorest performances in recent times although he did look relatively better after the break.

Frenkie de Jong: 7

While Frenkie de Jong was indeed one of Barcelona’s better players in terms of serving as part of the possession-building effort, the fact of the matter remains that he too looked fatigued and struggled to keep up with Sevilla’s energy.

Pedri: 7.5

Pedri was good when on the ball but did not put in the same shift as he usually does out of possession. He continued to look leggy as he did in the second half against PSG, although he did come up with a stunning assist for Marcus Rashford late in the first half.

Dani Olmo: 5.5

Olmo’s numbers on the night were decent, but came across as deceptive considering what one saw of him on the field. The player did not misplay many passes, but he was not involved in the buildup as much as Flick would have liked either.

In fact, Olmo’s sluggishness directly impacted Barcelona’s intensity in attack and led to slow transitions in the final third.

Ferran Torres: 4

Torres looked completely out of the game last night and was not involved even relatively close to what he has shown this season in attack.

His first half was one to forget as he attempted just nine passes in 45 minutes and the second period was not much better.

Marcus Rashford: 8.5

The Englishman was consistently one of Barcelona’s better players on the night although he too did not complete as many dribbles as he would have liked to.

Scored a stunning goal off Pedri’s assist to pull one back just before half-time and inject hope into the Catalans’ dressing room. Played more on the left after the break and looked even sharper.

Robert Lewandowski: 3

Lewandowski completed just four passes and 18 touches throughout the first half and never really got into a good goalscoring position.

He often dropped back deep in an effort to contribute but ended up adding nothing to the team at either end. Missed a penalty late in the game when the team needed a goal the most.

Alejandro Balde: 6

Came on in the second half and immediately improved Barcelona’s transitions from defence to attack. Won a penalty that could unfortunately not be converted.

Eric Garcia: 5

Replaced Ronald Araujo at half-time and made the team look far more comfortable in defence and possession and thus restored control for the Catalans.

Roony Bardghji: 4.5

Came on as a late substitute and created two big chances and somehow missed both on the night. Even one of them being converted could have changed the result.
