Manchester United are expected to strengthen their left-back position this summer.

Patrick Dorgu is expected to play as a left winger for Michael Carrick, and with Dorgu not an option at left-back and Harry Amass not yet considered ready, Luke Shaw lacks a reliable alternative in that position.

Given that, unlike last season, the veteran cannot play every game, a left-back signing is needed.

Lewis Hall the dream LB target

As per reports, Carrick’s dream left-back signing is Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall.

However, a move for Hall was never going to be easy. The highly technical, versatile left-back, who has taken the Premier League by storm with his brilliance, would command a fortune.

Truth on Lewis Hall to Man United talk

At 21 years old, he is a player who, if United were to sign him, could command their left flank for the next decade.

While that realisation should give the 20-time English champions leverage to strike a deal, transfer guru David Ornstein has dropped a transfer bombshell.

He said on The Athletic FC podcast: “I do NOT expect Lewis Hall to be coming to Man United. Following the departure of Eddie Howe, Newcastle will be MORE determined to keep him, maybe even tie him down to a new contract.”

That is not news United fans wanted to hear, as it only leaves them worried.

Still, while this deal looks unlikely, United, if Hall really is who they want, should test Newcastle’s resolve with tempting bids.

The alternatives

While they do that, INEOS will hopefully work on alternatives.

A left-back signing is so important that missing out on one could prove to be a transfer blunder, one that would not suit Carrick’s plans for next season.

That said, other than Hall, Antonee Robinson and Giorgio Scalvini have also been linked.
