Liverpool supporters’ unease around Arne Slot’s future has become one of the defining themes of the season, and Lewis Steele believes that discomfort is entirely understandable.
Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Steele made clear that fans are not overreacting to Liverpool’s struggles. After months of poor performances, defensive chaos and fading belief, he argued that supporters have every right to question whether Slot is the right man to lead the club forward.
Steele said Liverpool fans have “voted with their feet again” after another damaging away defeat, adding: “I don’t blame them at all for leaving.”
The issue, Steele explained, is not one bad result. It is repetition. Liverpool have kept producing the same problems, and fans have seen enough.
“They’re leaky, leaking chances. They can’t create enough in attack. They’re feeble at set pieces. They get played through too easy,” Steele said.
That frustration has shaped the debate around Slot’s future. Steele noted that many supporters still expect the Dutchman to stay, but that does not mean they are comfortable with it.
“We know he’s going to get next season, you know, 95, 99% sure,” Steele said, before adding that Slot “has got to show something different”.
For Steele, the biggest worry is the lack of evidence that Liverpool are close to turning things around.
“I’ve not seen anything to make me think it’s suddenly going to Slot’s going to click his fingers in the first day of preseason and it’ll all be fine again,” he said.
That line captures why the fanbase feels so unsettled. Supporters are not merely angry, they are unconvinced. Steele also said: “I’m not seeing any evidence to suggest that he knows how to change it right now.”

Davis and Steele also discussed the wider uncertainty at Liverpool, with questions around the squad, the hierarchy and the future direction of the club.
Steele summed up the mood by saying Liverpool are in a place where “there’s so many question marks about everything”.
That is why the fans’ discomfort matters. It is not hysteria. It is a response to what they have watched week after week. As Steele put it, “a lot is wrong”.
For Liverpool, backing Slot may still be the plan. For supporters, believing in that plan is becoming much harder.
